Technique: 7,644 textile squares 3-cm wide, hand-assembled and quilted on a canvas base with a silk core.

Description: As a student at the famous Bauhaus school, Karl Hermann Haupt conducted visual experimentations in 1923 and 1924. He explored the effects of lines of force, the links between black and white, positive and negative, based on photographic collages.

Starting from a collage of photographs by Karl Hermann Haupt– a snowscape repeated in 24 minuscule rectangles (2.8 x 5.5 cm) – Sabine Cibert retains the principle of repeating the motif and its mirror, but with a larger format that accentuates the visual effect of light diffraction and vibration.

The block’s change in direction, the very broad colour palette and the great variety of weaves all work to make the light vibrate, creating a pixellised image, as if diffracted, an echo that can propagate and bounce back in all directions.

The rigid lines help create a dynamic atmosphere of panoptic motion.
